Roughly twenty houses take guests. Rooms are simple and hard to book, and staying is the only way to be in Ogimachi outside 08:00 to 17:00.

The village empties at five
Shirakawa Village asks everyone who is not staying overnight to confine their visit to the hours between 08:00 and 17:00, and it enforces that indirectly by closing the municipal car parks at 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. The practical effect is dramatic. From late afternoon the lanes drain of people, the coach park empties, and the settlement reverts to what it is, which is a farming hamlet of a few hundred residents. Guests staying inside the district are the only visitors present for that transition, for the evening, and for first light the next morning. That, rather than the room, is what an overnight buys.
About twenty houses, and they fill fast
Only a fraction of Ogimachi's gassho houses take paying guests. The commonly cited figure is around twenty gassho minshuku across the settlement, family-run and small, typically with a handful of rooms each. Bookings go through two channels: the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association's official accommodation pages, which handle reservations for many of the houses, or the individual property's own site. Booking windows open months in advance and popular houses are reported to sell out within hours of release. If a specific farmhouse matters to you, work backwards from its release date rather than from your travel dates.
What the night actually looks like
These are family homes that take guests, not hotels dressed as farmhouses. Expect tatami rooms with futons rather than beds, shared bathrooms in most houses, dinner and breakfast served at set times, and local mountain cooking rather than a menu. Several houses still light an irori, the sunken hearth in the floor, and eating beside one is the closest most visitors get to how these buildings actually functioned, since it was hearth smoke that preserved the thatch overhead. Facilities vary considerably house to house, so read the individual listing rather than assuming a standard, particularly on bathrooms, heating and whether English is spoken.
The one night a year that is balloted
On winter light-up evenings, staying in the village stops being a matter of booking and becomes a matter of luck. Because guests staying inside Shirakawa Village receive light-up entry, and usually observation-deck access with it, the accommodation for those four nights is allocated by lottery rather than sold. For the January and February 2026 sessions, applications ran through October 2025. Entering costs nothing and commits you to nothing, but the odds are poor and you will not know the result for weeks. Build the trip so it survives a loss, and treat a win as the bonus it is.
House rules exist for a reason
Gassho roofs are dense thatch over a timber frame tied with plant fibre, and the village describes them frankly as extremely vulnerable to fire. Smoking is restricted to designated places across the settlement, walking while smoking is prohibited outright, and open flames of any kind are banned. Inside a minshuku, expect the host's rules on smoking, heating, curfew and quiet hours to be firmer than a hotel's, and expect them to be enforced. Guests staying in the district may drive to their lodging, but the village asks them to do so after 16:00 where possible, once day visitors have cleared the lanes.
