Four nights, and that is the entire season

The forty-first Shirakawa-go Light-Up runs on 11 January 2027, a Monday public holiday, then on the Sundays of 17, 24 and 31 January. Each session lasts two hours, from 17:30 to 19:30, and covers the Ogimachi district only. The village confirmed these dates on 1 July 2026. It has held the run at four sessions rather than the longer seasons of the past, citing warmer winters, unreliable snow and the timing of sunset. The event is run by the Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up Committee, which sits inside the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association. Four evenings a year is the whole supply, which is why the booking system looks the way it does.

Advance reservation is absolute

This is the point almost every outdated article gets wrong. The light-up has not been a turn-up-and-walk-in event for years. The official English announcement for 2027 states plainly that visitors without a reservation will not be admitted, even on the day. Entry is controlled by a ticket, and the ticket is allocated in advance through a small number of defined channels. There is no gate sale, no standby queue and no way to buy your way in locally on the evening. If you are staying in Takayama or Kanazawa and thinking of driving over for a look, you will be turned back at the approach roads rather than at a barrier inside the village.

The lottery is for beds, not for tickets

The most reliable route in is to sleep in the village on a light-up night, because guests staying inside Shirakawa Village receive entry, and in recent years an observation-deck ticket as well. Demand vastly exceeds the handful of rooms, so the accommodation is not sold first-come. It is balloted. For the fortieth edition, applications for the lodging lottery were open through October 2025, with results drawn afterwards. Applying is free, and applying does not mean going. Plan the surrounding trip so it still works if you lose, because most applicants do, and build the rest of your itinerary before you know the outcome.

The car park is the other door in

If you are driving, the route in is a reserved space in the designated light-up car park at Midashima Park, sold online in timed rounds. For the fortieth edition the first round opened on 10 September 2025 and sold out; a second round followed on 1 December 2025 at 13:00. A parking reservation admits you to the settlement but does not normally include the observation deck. Note what happens to the ordinary car parks that evening: the main Seseragi Park lot switches to reserved buses only from 17:00, and ordinary cars parked there must move to the Terao overflow lot by 15:00.

The observation deck is a second ticket

The classic light-up photograph, with the whole valley of lit roofs below you, is taken from the Ogimachi Castle ruins deck above the village. During the light-up that deck is capacity-controlled separately. An entry ticket gets you into the settlement at ground level; going up requires a distinct observation-deck ticket, which in practice arrives bundled with an overnight stay or with certain bus products rather than being sold on its own. If the deck matters to you more than the lanes do, choose your entry route on that basis. Underfoot conditions are ice over packed snow, in the dark, on a slope.

The 2027 booking calendar

As of late August 2026 the dates are fixed but the booking mechanics for the forty-first edition are not yet published. The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association has said that reservations for all related services begin in September 2026, with detailed procedures posted on its website in early September. Nohi Bus, which sells the route-bus light-up product from Takayama, has said its own 2027 tour details and booking method go live on 22 September 2026 at 14:00. Treat those two dates as the ones to diarise. Anything quoting 2027 prices before them is guessing, and last season's prices should not be assumed to carry over.
